The symbol of Ljubljana is not by chance the dragon – it plays a special role in both the city's history and culture.

The myth of the Argonauts
According to one of the oldest legends, Jason and the Argonauts, when they arrived in the region of the Ljubljanica River in search of the Golden Fleece, encountered a huge dragon in the marshy area. In a heroic fight, Jason defeated the monster, the memory of which has survived for centuries and over time has become the symbol of the city.
The Ljubljana Dragon and Christian Symbolism
In the Middle Ages, the dragon took on a new meaning. In Christian tradition, the dragon was the embodiment of evil, sin, and paganism. Thus, defeating the dragon was not only a heroic deed, but also a triumph of faith.
The city's inhabitants considered the dragon a symbol of hardship and external threats .
According to legend, just as Saint George defeated the dragon, Ljubljana has always been able to resist conquerors and preserve its freedom.
The dragon also appeared as the guardian of the city : although it once symbolized evil, over time it transformed and became a symbol of courage, strength, and protection over the city.
The Dragon Bridge and the modern urban symbol
The Dragon Bridge (Zmajski most), built in the early 20th century, definitively cemented its status as a symbol. The four huge bronze dragons have not only become one of Ljubljana's most iconic sights, but have also been included on the city's official coat of arms.
According to a local saying: “When a virgin crosses the Dragon Bridge, the dragons move.” This is of course just a playful superstition, but it shows how intertwined the dragon motif is in the lives of the city and its inhabitants.

Today, the Ljubljana dragon embodies the city's legendary past , the victory of Christian faith over evil, and the strength and independence of modern Ljubljana.
