Barcelona is a city of beaches, Gaudí buildings and tapas – and luckily, it’s also a paradise for gluten-free eaters. The Catalan capital is home to a growing number of restaurants, bakeries and cafés offering safe, gluten-free options, and many traditional Catalan dishes are even available in gluten-free versions.

Aruku – officially “Aruku BCN” – is a Japanese restaurant in the L'Eixample district where the entire menu is 100% gluten-free. It not only offers sushi, uramaki and teriyaki dishes, but also gyoza, tempura, karaage and all prepared with tamari sauce and special gluten-free ingredients. The restaurant is certified by the Catalan Celiac Association and also offers an affordable lunch menu, which is a great option.

The Fish & Chips Shop offers the classic fish & chips in an exclusively gluten-free version. Located around Balmes and Rocafort streets, the place pays special attention to celiacs: they use a dedicated gluten-free frying oil and serve the fish in a flaky, crispy breadcrumbs, accompanied by well-seasoned fries. It is ideal for an afternoon or evening snack, and gluten-free beer is also available.

Can Vernet Xurreria
A traditional churreria where they also make gluten-free churros. You can also ask for them with a chocolate sauce made from plant-based milk! They are delicious.

Classic Catalan dishes, naturally gluten-free, that you can enjoy anywhere
• Paella – Made with rice, but pay attention to the stock and spices.
• Escalivada – Roasted eggplant, peppers and onions, completely gluten-free.
• Crema Catalana – Gluten-free if no flour thickener is used. However, if you are also allergic to milk, this is not the dessert for you.
• Tapas – Patatas bravas, tortilla de patatas and olives are often gluten-free, but check the sauces. Jamon, crab and mussels are also good choices. Padrón (fried green peppers) is also recommended.
